Demonstration of the Moon Japanese Tea Ceremony, Chado, by Remi Kimura

Remi Kimura, born in Tokyo, Japan was brought up in a traditional tea house, where her grandmother dedicated herself into teaching Japanese tea ceremony for more than 50 years. She started learning tea ceremony at the age of 3 with her grandmother(professor), mother(professor), aunt(professor) and their alumni, provided ample opportunities to perform at tea gatherings since she was little. At the age of 25, she obtained a certificate of permission to be an associate professor in Ura-Senke, one of the three major schools of Japanese tea ceremony descended from the 16-century tea master, Sen No Rikyu.

Chado (chanoyu) or Japanese tea ceremony, is a spiritual and aesthetic discipline for refinement of the self. The four principals underlying this art of living are Harmony, Respect, Purity and Tranquility. It centers on the activity of host and guest spending a mutually heartwarming time together over a bowl of matcha tea. The host aims to serve the guest an unforgettably satisfying bowl of tea, and the guest responds with thankfulness, both of them realizing that the time shared can never be repeated, that it is a “once in a lifetime” occasion. The enduring allure of the way of tea is proof of its profound meaning for people – not only Japanese, but people of all cultures.

Time permitting our presenter will serve tea to attendees.

Light snacks afterwards.
