Creating Mosaic Artwork for National Historic Monuments

Zoom Only

Tuesday, June 20, 11:00 a.m.

Program: Glass mosaic concrete artwork was invented in the 1920s, but the methods to produce it had been long forgotten by the 1980s. We were commissioned to re-invented the historic process and create new glass mosaic concrete murals for two National Historic sites. You will learn the history of this unusual art and how we designed, produced, shipped, and installed the murals at the Vietnam War Memorial in Hawaii and at the Navy Memorial to Battle of Midway on Midway Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean.

Presenter: Bob Armbruster is an internationally recognized expert in the restoration of historic architectural concrete and in the creation of new mosaic concrete artworks. Bob’s projects have included work at the Baha’i Temple in Wilmette; the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington, DC; the Parthenon in Nashville, TN; the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC; Vietnam War Memorial Battle Maps in Hawaii, the Thomas Edison Memorial Tower in Menlo Park, NJ; Longwood Gardens outside of Philadelphia; and the Navy Memorial to the Battle of Midway on Midway Atoll.
