OZYMANDIAS
Shelley’s sonnet is a vivid evocation of ruin. The sense of isolation is captured with History sneering her cold command ‘look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair”. All Mighty, through the ages, despair at the recognition that their power too is transitory.
Without any tendentious symbolism, May 18’s presentation is a meditation on arrogance. Be it the Romans, the Mayans, or the Khmers, we will honor illustrious — perhaps vainglorious — empires, including their form and geometry, even though the fate of most of them was not necessarily glorious.
