Though it molds the quicksands of global politics with durable change, this commodity has had a rocky start. As the building block for concrete, glass and electronics, sand is the second most consumed good in the world by volume after water. Yet the narrative is much more than the shape shifting supply chain story about the commodification of prosaic matter. Few things rival the otherworldly aura of blue-green icebergs sparkling on the black sand beaches of Jökulsárlon's glacier lagoon in Iceland.
Viewed through the prisms of flora and fauna, real estate and global trade, sandy coastlines fabricate a fascinating Beauty and the Beast chronicle that is as memorable as the childhood fairytale. On October 27, through the power of perspective, observe your heretofore world view slip right through your fingers.
