Film (to be discussed): Minari

2020, Drama, Korean with English subtitles, Written and Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, Nominated for 2021 Academy Awards in 6 categories, wining best Supporting Actress (Youn Yuh-Jung as Soon-Ja).

Film Description: “Minari” meaning "water celery" in Korean, is a semi-autobiographical story that takes on Chung’s own rural upbringing in Arkansas. For the screenplay, he drew inspiration from Willa Cather and Fyodor Dostoevsky.  Minari beautifully tells the story of a South Korean family moving from California to rural farming community in Arkansas. This authentic tale reflects on radical issues of immigration and true American values in 1980s America.
