Program: Tariffs and Trade: Global Trade Tensions

The “liberal global order” which has been based on the expansion of trade and multilateralism since WWII is in retreat. Numerous countries, notably the US and China, are raising tariffs on each other’s goods; others, such as Great Britain, want to leave their trade block. Why is this happening, and what are the consequences? And what is the role of rising populism?

Presenter: IWA member Ann Berg, an expert in commodities and food security issues, has worked for many intergovernmental organizations including the World Bank and the UN Conference on Trade and Development. She is currently a senior advisor to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization in Rome.
