English-Speaking World

Designing Disney Theme Parks with guest speaker Christine Goosman

Have you ever wondered how the fabulous Disney theme parks were created? It was done by people called “Imagineers,” an incredibly talented group who came up with the ideas for the architecture, the rides, and the events. And these same Imagineers did the Disney theme parks in foreign countries as well. Every aspect of the installation, from the wording on the signs to the set up of the public toilets had to be reviewed to make sure things conformed to the local cultural norms.

IWA’s English-Speaking World program is fortunate to have as our April speaker Christine Goosman, a former Imagineer. After college, which included a semester in Japan, she worked as a free-lance writer, and was contacted by Walt Disney Imagineering and asked if she would be interested in writing for Disneyland and two new Disney theme parks currently in the works – Epcot Center and Tokyo Disneyland. She then stepped into the magical world of Imagineering, where artists, animators, inventors, designers, architects and hundreds of other specialists collaborated on creating new resorts, theme parks and attractions in the US and around the world. She never looked back. For nearly 30 years, Chris worked at Imagineering, working in California, Florida, Tokyo and Paris. She was seen by Disney executives as particularly talented at adapting Disney for other cultures.

As a Senior Show Writer, she developed show concepts, wrote scripts, directed audio sessions, art directed various projects, edited Disney books and print materials, and oversaw spiels and communications. She worked on attractions as diverse as the pun-filled Jungle Cruise and the spooky Haunted Mansion at Disneyland to working on the original core-team for the creative development of Disneyland Paris.

Reserve online for this fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of one of the US’s most prominent exports! Mickey and Minnie can truly be said to be universally recognized citizens of the world!
