Other Member Programs
IWA sponsors a number of other member programs throughout the year which provide an opportunity for sharing, learning, interaction and thebuilding of friendships. See the following descriptions of the primary member programs.
The annual business meeting of the membership of IWA is held each June and is planned as a luncheon event. The annual report of IWA’s past year of activities and finances is presented by the president, the election of the coming year’s board of directors is held, volunteer leaders are recognized and the accomplishments of the organization are celebrated. There is a long tradition of wearing a hat to this sophisticated event.
Although the cultural traditions and religious beliefs of the membership of IWA vary widely, all come together to celebrate during the December holiday season. This festive event is one of the largest of IWA’s annual programs as members of all of the cultural, language and activity groups participate in the sharing of food, wine and fun.
Founders Circle and Patron Member Appreciation Events
IWA has recently established a tradition of sponsoring invitation only appreciation events for the members of the organization that renew at the highest levels of membership. An annual dinner is being held each February for the Founders Circle level of members and their guests. A joint special event for the Patron and Founders Circle level of members will be held each September. Through the generosity of thesemembers IWA has the resources to maintain its complex operations, strengthen its position in the Chicago area community and expand its efforts philanthropically with Chicago Public School students.
IWA Founder’s 90th Birthday Party
In September of 2012 the membership of IWA joined together to celebrate the milestone birthday of the organization’s founder, Doe Thornburg. As a tribute to Doe, her long standing objective of creating a scholarship fund was fulfilled through the generous contributions of many of the members attending the celebration.
